Virginia Windshield Tint Laws
Under Virginia traffic code regulations, tinting your full front windshield is strictly prohibited without a specialized medical waiver. However, applying a shade visor strip at the top of the windshield is allowed.
Windshield Legality Breakdown
Windshield limits in Virginia follow the standard AS-1 line requirement: non-reflective tint allowed above as-1 line or top 5 inches.
What is the AS-1 Line?
The AS-1 line is a standardized marking required by federal regulations. It is usually stamped on the upper corners of passenger vehicle windshields, indicating where safety glass transitions from laminated visibility zones to protective structural zones. If your vehicle does not have a marked AS-1 line, Virginia default limits apply (typically the top 4 to 5 inches of the windshield glass). Any film extending below this boundary represents a primary visibility infraction.
Reflective & Colored Visors
Even if you stay above the AS-1 line, Virginia mandates additional restrictions:
- •No Color Distortion: Red, yellow, and amber colors are strictly banned because they distort the driver's perception of traffic light signals and police vehicles.
- •Reflectivity Limits: The visor strip must not be reflective (under must not be more than 20% reflective). Chrome or mirror visor wraps are illegal.
